A corona bonus for everyone!
by Eduard Schaepman, on 12 Nov 2020
It’s clear that we’re all done with the corona crisis. The reports about a vaccine are hopeful, but will that vaccine be available for the end of this year? Or do we need to wait until spring… It’s like reading tea leaves… Although it makes me really hopeful that next year, we will all be able to have a BBQ together, we are far from out of misery. Just think of all those people without a job, the bankruptcies, the loneliness… We all have had to deal with many setbacks, hoping for a better 2021.
But that’s actually not entirely true: not everyone had to deal with those setbacks. Once again, the government is applying double standards. One for the 'people', and one for government employees. The latter benefits from a wage increase, a one-off payment and a homework allowance! Homework allowance? Yes really! Civil servants get paid to be able to do their work safely from home... Imagine you’re getting a backache from zooming from your kitchen table! Or that would have to drive to the office yourself to get your own office chair to save some costs! And all those care workers who put their own health at risk day in and day out, at first even without the right protective equipment, waiting for their bonus... Something goes wrong there.
Don’t get me wrong: I sincerely think that all civil servants deserve a little extra: they too have had to work harder than normal. But we all had to work more. The care workers, the civil servants, but also all the other people with different professions. The office people often had to work with fewer staff – and not always less tasks – the shopkeepers are working alone most of the times, the hairdressers have had to work extra hard to catch up after their shops closed the first time, and all those people in the hospitality industry, who wanted to, but weren’t allowed… Everywhere, people have suffered from the corona crisis, everywhere we experienced ‘high pressure at work’, just like the special investigating officers who can also count on a nice bonus for that reason. In these times, especially with the festive season around the corner, everyone can use something extra.
And that’s the moment when you get a surprise from the government. If you want to be eligible for the third round for government support, you are not allowed to grant anyone in your company a bonus. You can only use the money to save your company from the abyss. You can’t give any of it to your employees, who have worked their asses off to save that same company from that same abyss to thank them. And then I find it rather bitter that civil servants can count on salary increases, one-time benefits and homework allowances this year...
