The mind needs to travel to be creative!
by Eduard Schaepman, on 20 Feb 2020
After the business trips to the warm(er) Israel and Tanzania, this week I am skiing in Lech. Time to relax and spend quality time with the family. Of course, in between activities I open the computer for a while, to answer the necessary e-mails and take care of business.
We're not the only ones who have travelled to the famous ski resorts: a lot of neighbors, acquaintances and other Dutch people are also here, to relax and recharge. But is that what we really do? Are we returning well-rested and recharged from our holidays?
We like to tell ourselves that we do recharge on holiday. Being away from everything, escaping the daily routing, and recharging in the sun or in the snow. But when you see your holiday as a salvation, something isn’t right. Your holiday must be the icing on the cake, and it’s the time to make beautiful memories with your loved ones, not the moment to escape from your routine, to dive back into it when you’ve returned.
The holiday in itself can give you indeed an energetic feeling. It’s the new environment and stepping away from your daily rhythm, what helps you to stop moving around on the autopilot, and you can feel the stress going away. But, we have to realize that if you let yourself become independent on those few weeks a year, it can also be counterproductive. Just think of the stressful preparation for the holiday: arranging the accommodation; packing suitcases for yourself, the children, maybe your partner; cleaning the house, arranging a babysit for the dog, and then the journey in itself… But at least you can still enjoy a few days in the snow. Imagine coming back after a long car drive, and still have to do a lot of laundry and have to go to the office the next morning… Within no-time it’s just like you never went on a holiday.
How can you make sure that you can keep those holiday vibes a bit longer, and that you don’t start your holiday exhausted, or return immediately tired? We charge our beloved phones every day, but forget about ourselves regularly… Do not just charge yourself on holiday, but charge yourself all year round…
Don’t go to work on the autopilot, but look for a different environment to work in. You will be amazed by what it can do to you: you will indeed break through that 'daily routine'. Why not work in African atmospheres one day and on the Siberian ice fields the next?
At Tribes we don't say ‘The mind needs to travel to be creative' without reason, and you can travel with all year round. Don't wait until the holidays, but make sure you can broaden your gaze now. Try a Tribes Business Card, and work 10 times in another Tribes location, for 10 full days you’ll have the feeling like you're gone for a while.
