World Mental Health Day: A Call to Action for Mental Health

World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on October 10 to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. The theme for 2023 is "Mental health is a universal human right."

Mental health is just as important as physical health, but it is often neglected. One in four people in the world will experience a mental health disorder at some point in their lives. Yet, only one in five people with a mental disorder receives the treatment they need.

There are many factors that can contribute to poor mental health, including stress, trauma, genetics, and environmental factors. Mental health disorders can range from mild to severe, and can affect a person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Some of the most common mental health disorders include depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Depression is a mood disorder that causes feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness. Anxiety is a condition that causes excessive worry and fear. Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that affects a person's ability to think, feel, and behave normally.

Improving mental health

There are many things that can be done to improve mental health. These include:

  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Spending time with loved ones
  • Practising relaxation techniques
  • Seeking professional help if needed

Mental health in the workplace

Mental health is also important in the workplace. Employees with poor mental health are more likely to miss work, be less productive, and have accidents. They are also more likely to suffer from burnout and turnover.

Employers can help improve mental health in the workplace by:

  • Providing access to mental health resources, such as counseling and therapy
  • Creating a supportive and understanding work environment
  • Promoting healthy workplace practices, such as flexible work arrangements and stress management programs

Importance for ESG rating and responsibilities

Employers who take steps to improve mental health in the workplace are not only doing the right thing for their employees, but they are also improving their ESG rating. ESG stands for environmental, social, and governance, and it is a measure of how a company is performing in these areas.

Companies with a strong ESG rating are more attractive to investors and customers, and they are also less likely to be sued or fined for environmental or labor violations.
