Yesterday we celebrated World Ocean Day. Officially recognized by the UN General Authority in 2009.

World Ocean day is a global celebration of the ocean held every year on June 8th. It is meant to raise awareness of the ocean’s importance and the many issues surrounding it. The World Ocean Day 2022 theme is Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.

The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, and being the largest ecosystem on our planet, it functions as a life support system for all its inhabitants. The idea for a World Ocean Day was proposed for the first time by Canada at the Earth Summit that took place in 1992. Its aim would be celebrating our world’s ocean and our personal connection to the sea, as well as raising awareness on the essential role it plays in our lives and the overall health of the environment.

The focus of this event will be safeguarding our ocean, it’s ecosystems and biodiversity and building climate change resiliency. We need to conserve our wonderful marine resources for future generations. The Tribe with most links to the sea/ocean life is the Bajau Tribe. The Bajau are a group of people originating from the Philippines and now living in the waters off the coats of Malaysia. Because of their world status as outsiders, they were forbidden from living on Malaysian soil.

As they have a strong fishing culture, they carved out a new home for themselves – in the sea! They’ve been living this way for centuries, and there are currently about a million of them, according to some estimates. They are known as the sea Gypsies. Within Tribes, we have an entire building dedicated to the Bajau Tribe located at Brussels Central Station. This incredible space offers coworking space, inspiring meeting rooms and office spaces on demand to help the wider Belgian business community!
